When I was growing up, “Eat your beets” was the oft-repeated mantra
of caring moms and dads–including mine.
Back then beets weren’t my favorite, but I managed to force them down,
under pressure.
Since I was very anemic, beets were the blood-building “tonic du jour”.
Nowadays, as an enlighted veggie lover, I happily embrace the nutritional
benefits of beets and consume them as often as possible.
It’s no surprise that beets have been used in folk medicine for centuries.
One reason is that, betanin, the pigment in red beets, has antioxidant
properties.
On top of that, beet root:
-is especially rich in folate (up to 22% RDA of folate (in a one 2-inch piece of beet).
-is rich in copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and potassium.
-and also supplies 1 gram of protein.
That’s why I dub the red-hued blends of beet juice and smoothie combos
‘finer than wine”.
They are good for you and they taste good too.
More About Beets
Raw beets have a strong, earthy taste, so it may take you a while to get
accustomed to the distinct flavor of this mighty root, but believe me,
it is worth the effort.
Despite their strong taste, beet’s flavor blends well with fruits like apples,
strawberries, pears, pineapples and bananas.
They also taste good with mild green vegetables such as butter and romaine
lettuce, escarole and spinach.
You’ll probably want to avoid mixing strong, bitter greens, including beet greens,
with your beet roots.
Make sure to choose your beets carefully.
Pick beets that feel firm and are free of deep holes, cracks and blemishes.
Pass up beets that look too dry and shriveled.

I love my beets but I also love my wine…what to do, what to do?
Whenever I order a Greek salad, I take the beets off before I begin eating. I’ve never gotten used to their taste. However, I would try one of these smoothie recipes. So maybe I will! 🙂
Hi Pam,
I know what you mean! Growing up I found beets less appealing! Now I enjoy them when they are blended with compatible ingredients or cooked in a tasty manner. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate it.
This is such a fantastic post, Deborah!
I have been on a smoothie kick (since I recently received a Vitamix from my hubs as a surprise gift). <3 I am always looking for new recipe ideas and I know that beets are super good for me, but I have a hard time with the taste. I think I'l give them another try and mix them with some of the ideas you have in this post.
Thank you for stopping by *Mostly* Homemade Mondays and sharing this week. I hope to see you again tomorrow. 🙂

Roasted beet smoothie with cherries or blueberries and CHOCOLATE powder! I use raw cacao powder. Its a match made in heaven plus a little caffeine kick from the cacao. I also add in spinach, hemp seed and cilantro. Very similar to the one you have posted above!
Hi Janelle,
Wow, your ingredients sound so good1 I can’t wait to try them. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I really appreciate it.
I love beetroot in smoothies, I was never a fan of it as a kid but now it’s often the health benefits that draw me towards a food and your’re right about beets being amazing! Thanks for linking this up to the Weekend Wholefood Blender Party, this post is being featured this week 😀
Beet is one of my favorite smoothie ingredients. A little goes a long way, right? It adds so much nutrition and flavor. And who doesn’t love extra red lips? 😉
I put in spinach, juiced kale, juiced apple, 1 cup pineapple, juiced beet and water. So good, thank you for these different combinations.
Hooray for Clarissa,
How did you like it? I am so glad you had fun with beet juice combinations! I just made a beet smoothie today and I added chia seeds and hemp powder so it is quite thick and creamy. Have fun!
Deborah,
The first time I heard about beet I thought I wouldn’t like it, I mean it’s a root crop. The only root crop I’d eat before is sweet potato.
Then one day I just said what the heck? I’ll try it… they said it’s an aphrodisiac :).
It tasted better than I could have imagined….
Here are a couple of recipes I’ve tried… http://www.juicingwithg.com/beet-juice-recipes/
I especially like the apple beet combo with other greens… it had a certain sweetness to it hard to describe.

Up!
My husband and I have been using our new Nutriblast for almost two weeks and have been experimenting with yummy green drinks. Yesterday my husband said, can we find a red drink? I couldn’t perfect the color red and then I remembered the good ol’ beet. I found these recipes and what a beautiful, healthy, delicious red it was! Thank you!
Great, Melissa, I am so glad you enjoyed the beet juice and smoothie recipes. Thank for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate it!
Juices with beetroot in are always my favourite. Love how packed with nutrition it is too!
The Beet-cherry-hemp smoothie is sounding really good right now 😀
Hi Emma,
I am delighted that you enjoy beetroot juices and smoothies as well! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. I appreciate it.
Hi Deborah,
When you say “juicing” do you mean use a juicer and not a vitamix/blender? I only have a vitamix – not a juicer
Some great recipes there.
One of my favourite Beet juice recipes is:
Beets, carrots, apple, orange, celery and an inch of ginger. The ginger really gives the juice a great kick!
Btw I have a couple of other beetroot recipes on my blog. If I decide to take some further inspiration and add one of yours, i’ll sure to link back and reference your page if that’s cool Deborah?
